The new draft law of the State National Security Committee of Kyrgyzstan on amendments to the Civil Procedure Code, as well as to the law “On countering terrorism” are an attempted pressure against the freedom of speech and control of dissenting media, experts say.

The ministry of culture, information and tourism of Kyrgyzstan creates multimedia centres in order to optimise regional media. Despite the fact that the freedom of speech situation in Kyrgyzstan is better than in other Central Asian states, experts say there should be no illusion about it.
“Last year Kazakstan adopted many legislation amendments, including law on media, which recognises some statements as propaganda. It means that journalists preparing some material now should think whether it will be taken as propaganda,” said Gulmira Birzhanova, lawyer of Legal Media Centre, in the interview to CABAR.asia.
