On December 9 and December 14, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting in Central Asia (IWPR CA) presented the Handbook for journalism tutors “Handbook on New Media” in Bishkek and Dushanbe. The Handbook is one of the important outcomes of the long-term CABAR.asia Media School’s initiative to work with the journalism faculties.

In Tajikistan, following independence, there was a split in society, which led to a civil war as early as the spring of 1992. To a large extent, this split had parochial (regionalism) roots. Armed clashes lasted for about five years. On June 27, 1997 a “General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan” was signed between the government of Tajikistan and the opposition. Over these years, people have lost loved ones, property, their homeland, and some have lost their childhood. (more…)

Tajikistan has begun reforming its penitentiary system, which will last until 2030. The Tajik Ministry of Justice hopes that with the help of implemented international standards, it will be possible to relieve closed institutions and build modern and equipped prisons. The government also plans to reduce the number of repeat offenders among former prisoners, prevent the spread of radicalism and extremism in prisons and improve the effectiveness of prison staff.
