Frederick Starr: For Central Asian States the Regional Cooperation is Important, But Not Integration and Loss of Sovereignty
«The history of last 28 years was dominated by the consolidation of sovereignty in every country in Central Asia including Afghanistan. This was very difficult at first and problematic but it has been successful – all the states survived their difficult first years. They are developing at different rates today but none of them is stagnant», – states Frederick Starr – American geopolitical scientist, advisor to three US presidents on Russia/Eurasia, founder of the Institute of Central Asia and the Caucasus, in the interview for CABAR.asia
“Today 70 per cent of economically active population of Kyrgyzstan don’t save for their retirement, which is 1.5mil people. One worker, instead of three, as recommended by the International Labour Organisation, supports one retiree,” Shamil Atakhanov, a founder and honorary chairman of the non-governmental pension fund, said in the interview to CABAR.asia.

The new approach of Tashkent to the relations with neighbours has opened new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on diverse issues, including hard-line issues, said Komil Rashidov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Kyrgyzstan, in the interview to CABAR.asia analytical platform.
“Peace in Afghanistan has a large international dimension, which unites the interests and positions of global and regional powers, each of which uses the “Afghan card” to strengthen its position in order to achieve certain political goals,” – Anna Gusarova, an expert in international security, director of Central Asian Institute for Strategic Studies, said.
“Currently the country is implementing the economic reform. The economic reform needs a strong resource support. The country has no own funds to implement this reform. It needs to attract Russian, Chinese, western and any other capital,” Andrei Grozin, an expert on Central Asia, said.
