In the last decade, Kazakhstan has developed a sustainable trend of negative external migration. From 2012, according to the Bureau for National Statistics of Kazakhstan, 162 thousand people moved to the country, and twice as large, 333 thousand citizens, left Kazakhstan for permanent residence. Since 2017, Kazakhstan has had a programme of voluntary migration from densely populated southern regions to labour-scarce northern regions. The migrants receive social package, namely, employment and accommodation assistance.
Many men left without work due to the coronavirus in Tajikistan are forced to stand for hours waiting for employers at ‘mardikorbazars’.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Russia has banned the entry of foreign citizens until May 1. The party impacted by this decisions are thousands of migrants from Central Asian countries, who lost their jobs at the beginning of the season.

«Labor migration is often the only way out of a difficult financial situation. However, the factor of the absence of parents leads to many psychological and social problems of the child,» – Aigerim Arzymatova, a specialist of the Office of the Ombudsman, Kyrgyz Republic, a participant of the School of Analytics CABAR.asia, notes in her article written specifically for CABAR.asia.
According to official data, in the last 10 years more than 321 thousand people left Kazakhstan. This number equals the population size in the town of Semei, where 323,199 people live as of January 1, 2019. Over 25 per cent of emigrants are people in the age of 15 to 28 years old.
Kyrgyzstan has discussed the efficient use of money of migrant workers for a few years, but still hasn’t clear understanding of it. They increasingly prefer to invest money in business back home instead of holding feasts or purchasing apartments.
