Central Asian states have experienced a record abnormal heat wave as thermometers hit record-high temperatures. According to experts, such weather becomes a new normal in the region.
“China’s presence in the security dimension in Central Asia is closely related to its national interests, and unlike Russia, which sees the region as an extension of itself, China is not willing to overcommit, and it rather employs soft powers as its main strategy in cooperation with Stans,” experts conclude on the roundtable organized by IWPR CA and OSCE Academy on June 30th, 2022. Despite geopolitical disturbances in the last four months, and the disruption of logistical chains all over the world, trading ties inside the Eurasian region have remained strong. According to statistics, the trade turnover between Central Asian states and Russia has increased by 14 per cent on the average since the start of the year, yet the economy development rates in the region decelerate. Two and a half months ago, the Go Viral festival was moving from capital to capital of Central Asian states and gathered over 5 thousand enthusiasts, experts, beginning and future specialists in four domains – business, media, culture and technologies.
During the latest expert meeting on CABAR.asia analytical platform, the experts from four countries of the region (except Turkmenistan) discussed cybersecurity issues in Central Asian countries and measures the governments and civil society take to ensure it.
“Today the US Strategy for Central Asia is defunct. It has to be thought through from the beginning and a new strategy has to be devised that more adequately embraces current realities” – states Dr. Frederick Starr, an American academic historian, expert on Central Asia, Russia and Eurasia, and chairman of the Central Asia and Caucasus Institute, in an interview to CABAR.asia.
“The fear is increasing in Central Asia that a default domino is just around the corner and, looking at the overall stance of both their strategic partners, Moscow and Beijing, they are bound to look for alternatives. India is best situated at seizing this opportunity and this can be a step at changing the balances with China and Russia”, – writes analyst Dimitris Simeonidis, exclusively for CABAR.asia.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, the Russian authorities started to mobilise its resources. Natives of Central Asia, who have received citizenship of Russia, are being invited to military commissariats. Meanwhile, contract soldiers – namely, migrants who can obtain a Russian passport for their military service in the longer term, are being mobilised.
