About 40 people in Kazakhstan cannot prove the death of their relatives who left for the combat zones in Syria and Iraq and went missing.
Despite the reforms meant to expand civil liberties announced by the president of Kazakhstan, the freedom of speech situation did not become any better in 2020. According to the ‘Adil Soz’ freedom of speech fund, 12 attacks on journalists took place in 2020, and 25 employees of media outlets, bloggers and activists were detained for expressing their views.

In 2020, 63 criminal cases under article 146 “Torture” of the Criminal Code were registered in Kazakhstan, according to the Legal Statistics and Special Records Committee of the General Prosecutor’s Office. Only 11 of them were brought to court.

The Tajik court sentenced Doniyor Nabiev, 80, former member of the banned Islamic Renaissance Party (IRPT), to seven years of imprisonment. Experts and human rights organisations expressed their concern, considering this sentence as inadequate and tantamount to the death penalty.
Since 2017, Kazakhstan has had a programme of voluntary migration from densely populated southern regions to labour-scarce northern regions. The migrants receive social package, namely, employment and accommodation assistance.
