IWPR: Second School of Analytic Journalism CABAR.asia Has Come to an End

Central Asia-based journalists have been intensely trained and will further apply their skills in their editorial offices and on CABAR.asia analytical platform.

23 journalists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were trained at the second School of Analytic Journalism CABAR.asia, which was held in Almaty.

It was organised by IWPR Central Asia as part of the project to develop analytics and analytic journalism in Central Asian countries. The first school was held last summer in Bishkek.

When there’s next request for applications, the journalists must apply and have a go because this school takes you to the next level and you improve your knowledge in all genres and formats of journalism (Yekaterina Alifanova, Kazakhstan)

. This year, journalists were taking part in trainings and master classes in analytic journalism, storytelling, as well as internet security, ethics in journalism, hate speech, promotion of materials in social media for eight days.

There were also workshops on video production for social media and data journalism, a session on photo essay production.

The trainers were editors of IWPR and CABAR.asia, experienced specialists from Kazakhstan (Diana Okremova in hate speech, Anna Sukhacheva in social media promotion), Kyrgyzstan (Altynai Mambetova and Saviya Khasanova in data journalism, Artem Goryainov in internet security) and Uzbekistan (Elyer Nematov in photo reporting).

Anastasiya Lotareva, editor-in-chief of the Russian portal takiedela.ru, hosted a session on storytelling, while Vlad Krylevsky, SMM producer of the Ukrainian Service of Radio Liberty, taught journalists how to create videos for social media.

By results of the school, the graduation works of the participants will be published on www.cabar.asia. Further on, they will be applying their knowledge within their editorial offices and in cooperation with CABAR.asia as freelance journalists.

Vasila Nuralishoeva, independent journalist in Tajikistan:

I have established new contacts with journalists. I hope it will help me create materials at the regional level. Now I understand the structure of an analytical article, how to keep to international standards. I will definitely use this knowledge in my work. The programme has been so rich and provided so much new and useful information.

IWPR Central Asia launched this project in early 2018 to train the new generation of analysts and journalist-analysts, who will analyse the urgent issues and events in their home countries, raise public awareness, and promote the development of their countries and the region as a whole.

Based on these publications, IWPR is regularly holding regional and country discussions concerning most important issues, involving analysts and journalists of CABAR.asia, experts, officials and other stakeholders.

Almira Abidinova, journalist from Osh, south Kyrgyzstan:

I am thankful that this School of Analytic Journalism has involved journalists from various regions of our republic. Very often such large-scale programmes involve only journalists from the capital, but here regional journalists have also been given a chance for development, which we appreciate so much.

Also, meetings of participants of analytics and analytic journalism programme are being held from time to time, where they discuss urgent issues of the region, discuss their works, share their experiences and hold trainings.

The most active participants of the School of Analytics and School of Analytic Journalism CABAR.asia-2018 took on-site training at think-tanks and media outlets of Georgia this June. The most active participants of second schools will take on-site training next year.
